How to play Spades

You and a randomly selected Democratic politician play against two different Republican politicians. Names are drawn at the start of each new game and stay for the whole match. Each player receives 13 cards and bids how many tricks they expect to win.

Follow suit if you can. Otherwise play any card. The highest spade wins; if no spade is played, the highest card in the led suit wins. Aces are high.

Spades must be broken by being played off-suit before they can be led, unless your hand contains only spades.

Your game saves automatically in this browser on this device. Return to resume your hand. New game replaces the saved game.

Scoring: Make your combined team bid to earn 10 points per bid trick, plus 1 point (and one bag) per extra trick. Miss your bid and lose 10 points per bid trick. Every 10 bags costs 100 points.

Nil: Bid zero and take no tricks for +100, or lose 100 if you take any. Failed nil tricks count as bags, not toward your partner’s bid.

First team to 500 wins. If both reach 500, the higher score wins; ties play another hand. No blind nil or jokers at this table.

A playful, unofficial game. All players are computer-controlled except you; table banter is fictional, not a quote or endorsement. Party affiliations: U.S. Senate directory.
